A major political shift has unfolded in West Bengal after Governor R N Ravi officially dissolved the state legislative assembly following the completion of its term. The move comes days after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’s long rule in the state.

The dissolution means Mamata Banerjee no longer remains the chief minister, despite publicly refusing to resign after the election results. The political developments have sharply intensified tensions in the state as the BJP prepares to form the next government.

West Bengal Assembly Dissolved by Governor

Governor R. N. Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7 after the official completion of its five-year term. The order was issued under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India.

According to the official notification issued by Lok Bhavan, the assembly ceased to exist once its constitutional term ended. The outgoing assembly was formed in 2021 when the Trinamool Congress returned to power for a third straight term under Mamata Banerjee.

The dissolution now clears the way for the BJP to formally begin the process of government formation after its decisive election win.

Mamata Banerjee No Longer West Bengal CM

The dissolution of the assembly effectively ended Mamata Banerjee’s tenure as chief minister. Constitutional experts had earlier indicated that even without a formal resignation, the chief minister’s position would automatically end once the assembly term expired.

However, Mamata Banerjee had strongly opposed stepping down after the election defeat and accused the BJP and the Election Commission of conspiracy. “No question of me resigning, we were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy,” said Mamata during her press conference earlier this week.

In another closed-door meeting, she reportedly told party leaders: “Let them impose President’s Rule if they want. Let them dismiss me if they want.”

Who Will Be the New CM of West Bengal?

The Bharatiya Janata Party has not officially announced its chief ministerial candidate for West Bengal yet, but several senior BJP leaders have emerged as strong contenders after the party’s historic election victory.

At present, Suvendu Adhikari is considered the frontrunner for the top post. Reports suggest the BJP leadership is seriously considering his name because of his major role in the party’s campaign and his strong political influence in the state.

Other names being discussed include Samik Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh, and Agnimitra Paul. Reports indicate the BJP leadership may take the final decision after discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

According to recent reports, the BJP government’s swearing-in ceremony in West Bengal is expected to take place on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.

BJP Secures Massive Victory in West Bengal Elections 2026

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a dominant win in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections by winning 207 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark. The result marked one of the BJP’s biggest political breakthroughs in eastern India.

Meanwhile, the All India Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats, suffering a major setback after ruling the state for nearly 15 years.

The BJP’s victory has significantly altered the political landscape in West Bengal and strengthened the party’s national position ahead of future elections.

West Bengal Elections 2026: Political Tensions Rise After Election Results

The political atmosphere in West Bengal has remained tense since the election results were announced. Reports of violence, protests, and heavy security deployment emerged from several districts after the BJP’s victory.

Security arrangements around Kalighat, Mamata Banerjee’s residence area, have also reportedly changed following the transition in power.

Opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, have also met Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata following the election defeat.

What Happens Next in West Bengal Elections 2026?

The BJP is now expected to formally stake a claim to form the next government in West Bengal. Reports suggest the swearing-in ceremony for the new administration could happen within the next few days.

Political attention is now focused on who the BJP will choose as its next chief minister and how quickly the transition process will take place. For now, the dissolution officially marks the end of the Trinamool Congress government’s tenure in West Bengal after 15 years in power.
