The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, signalling the party’s early preparations for the crucial political battle in the state. The announcement came shortly after the Election Commission of India declared the election schedule for four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The West Bengal Assembly elections will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, marking a significant reduction from the eight-phase election held in 2021. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, along with results from Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
With this candidate list, the BJP aims to strengthen its campaign across various constituencies in the state.

West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 Phases
The Election Commission of India has scheduled the West Bengal Assembly elections in two phases this year.
The polling dates are as follows:
- Phase 1: April 23, 2026
- Phase 2: April 29, 2026
The counting of votes will be conducted on May 4, 2026, along with the results of other states going to the polls.
This schedule marks a major change compared to the 2021 West Bengal elections, which were conducted in eight phases due to security and logistical considerations.
Why the Election Commission Reduced the Number of Phases
The decision to hold the elections in fewer phases has attracted significant attention. Addressing questions about the change, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar explained that the poll body had carefully reviewed the situation before deciding on the schedule.
He said the Election Commission had held detailed discussions and decided that reducing the number of phases would make the process easier for everyone involved.
According to him, the poll panel aimed to bring the election schedule to a level that would ensure convenience for voters, election officials and security agencies.
West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: Election Campaign Expected to Intensify
With the election schedule announced and candidates declared, political campaigning in West Bengal is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
Major parties, including the BJP, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the Congress-Left alliance, are preparing for a highly competitive contest.
