Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to become the Chief Minister of West Bengal. He will be the first BJP Chief Minister of the state.
According to reports, Union Minister Amit Shah announced his name in the presence of newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party leaders. The oath ceremony of the newly elected BJP government will take place on May 9 at the Brigade Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and the chief ministers of NDA-ruled states.
Bengal BJP Chief Proposed Adhikari’s Name
Suvendu Adhikari’s name was also proposed by the BJP’s West Bengal unit chief, Samik Bhattacharya, earlier today. He himself was among the frontrunners for the chief minister’s post.
Adhikari won from both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly constituencies. He emerged as the giant slayer after defeating outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
As the BJP is set to form the government in West Bengal for the first time, discussions were underway regarding the appointment of two deputy chief ministers, with one post likely to go to a woman leader.
Oath Ceremony in West Bengal: Date, Time and Place
The oath ceremony of the new BJP government will take place on May 9 at 10 pm. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Brigade Parade Ground, Kolkata.
About Suvendu Adhikari
Born on December 15, 1970, Suvendu Adhikari served as the Leader of the Opposition and leader of the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party till May 5, 2026.
He also served as a state minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government from 2016 to 2020. He was the Minister of Transport from 2016 to 2020 and held the Irrigation and Water Resources portfolio from 2018 to 2020.
He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) three times from Nandigram in 2016, 2021, and recently in 2026. This year, he also contested from the Bhabanipur constituency, where he defeated Mamata Banerjee by 15,000 votes.
He was also elected from South Contai (now Kanthi Dakshin) in 2005 and served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Tamluk in 2009 and 2014.
Before joining the BJP, Adhikari was a member of the Trinamool Congress from 1998 to 2020 and the Indian National Congress from 1995 to 1998. His father, Sisir Adhikari, was a Member of Parliament and former Union Minister of State for Rural Development in the Manmohan Singh government.
Suvendu Adhikari Net Worth
As per Suvendu Adhikari’s affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, his total assets are worth ₹85.87 lakh. He also reported zero liabilities, and his wealth mainly comprises immovable properties, including ancestral land and residential buildings.
His movable assets are worth ₹24.57 lakh. He declared cash in hand of ₹12,000. He has accounts in 14 banks, including PNB, SBI, Axis Bank, IDBI Bank, and several cooperative banks in Contai and Nandigram, with deposits worth ₹7.34 lakh. As per his declaration, he does not own any motor vehicles or jewellery.
