Five supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were injured after a crude bomb attack in Panihati, police said on Thursday. The incident took place late on Wednesday night in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, adding to rising political tension in the region.
What Happened in Panihati?
According to police, unidentified attackers on motorcycles hurled crude bombs at a group of BJP workers near St Xavier’s Institution in Panihati. At least five people were injured in the explosion and were immediately taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Local reports said BJP workers were interacting with residents on Dutta Road in Ward No. 2 when the attackers struck suddenly and fled the scene.
Link to Earlier Political Violence
The attack happened just hours after the killing of Chandranath Rath, a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who was shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in the same district. The BJP has claimed that the violence is part of retaliatory attacks, while accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of involvement. The allegation has been strongly denied by the party led by Mamata Banerjee.
Police Response and Investigation
A senior police officer said that a detailed investigation has been launched.
“We have started an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify those involved. Raids are being conducted to nab the accused,” the officer said.
Police have increased security in the area and are maintaining strict surveillance to prevent further unrest. Authorities also urged the public not to spread rumours and assured that steps are being taken to maintain peace.
Political Tension in the Area
The blast site is located near the residence of newly elected BJP MLA Ratna Debnath, further adding to the sensitivity of the situation.
The incident has intensified political tensions in North 24 Parganas, with both major parties trading accusations while investigations continue.
