West Bengal Election Results Live Update: Mamata Banerjee’s Govt Finally Dissolved

During the late hours of Thursday night, West Bengal’s governor RN Ravi officially dissolved the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government as its tenure came to an end. The TMC, which could only win 80 seats in the 2026 Assembly Elections, refused to step down after a shocking loss.

The Governor’s office in Kolkata issued a formal announcement for the same. “In exercise of the powers conferred upon the Governor under sub-clause (b) of clause 2 of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, RN Ravi, Governor of West Bengal, has issued an order dissolving the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, 2026,” the announcement said.

Debasree Chaudhary, a senior BJP leader said that the governor followed constitutional procedure to dissolve the government. “Mamata Banerjee did not want to step down from the Chief Minister’s position, but the Governor has dismissed her in the very constitutional manner that is prescribed – this is the system, and it will proceed in the same way,” Chaudhary said.

Protests Continue Over Killing of Chandranath Rath

Chandranath Rath, a decorated veteran from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and PA of Suvendu Adhikari, was killed by assailants in Madhyagram. His death sparked massive backlash, with BJP workers rushing to the hospital where he finally succumbed to bullet wounds.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called the killing ‘a cold-blooded murder’ and vowed to take revenge. Adhikari also added that he had spoken to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President Nitin Nabin about the tragic incident.

Other BJP leaders in Bengal, including Agnimitra Paul, Swapan Dasgupta, Dilip Ghosh and Samik Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya, the state’s party president, described the killing as ‘a planned attack’, with Dasgupta, a former journalist and Rajya Sabha MP, echoing his sentiments.

Trinamool Congress also condemned the killing and called for an enquiry.

Votes Under Pressure: The Akhilesh – Mamta Meet

On 7th May 2026, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav met with former CM Mamta Banerjee, and told her that she fought well. In a shocking allegation, Yadav, also claimed that people of West Bengal voted under pressure, not by choice.

“What has happened in Bengal. A way has been found to destroy democracy. No one has probably damaged democracy as the BJP has. They can never see a woman rising. Voting has indeed taken place here, but people have voted more under pressure, rather than of their own will,” he said while speaking to reporters.

The New Epoch: BJP’s Oath Taking Ceremony Scheduled for May 9
