Former Indian Air Force Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman, known for his role in the 2019 aerial combat with Pakistan, has joined Indian regional airline FLY91 as a pilot, according to sources. The 43-year-old officer retired from the IAF in March and reportedly joined the airline in July. Details about his specific position and flying duties have not been disclosed. FLY91 declined to comment, citing employee privacy.
Who Is Abhinandan Varthaman?
Varthaman rose to international prominence following the February 2019 Balakot air strike, when he participated in an aerial engagement with Pakistani aircraft. During the confrontation, he shot down a Pakistani F-16 before his own MiG-21 Bison was hit. He ejected over Pakistan-occupied territory and was subsequently captured by Pakistani forces.
He was released after three days and returned to India.
Abhinandan Varthaman Awarded Vir Chakra
For his actions during the aerial combat, Varthaman received the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award, in 2021. The award citation recognised his conduct during the encounter, particularly his decision to engage Pakistani aircraft despite being outnumbered. He was a Wing Commander during the 2019 operation and was later promoted to Group Captain.
Abhinandan Varthaman’s New Role At FLY91
Varthaman reportedly joined FLY91 after completing his IAF career. The airline, which began commercial operations in March 2024, operates ATR 72-600 aircraft and focuses on connecting smaller cities with larger aviation hubs. The airline has bases in Goa and Hyderabad and serves destinations including Bengaluru, Hubballi, Pune, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Tirupati and Agatti.
There is currently no official information on the routes or aircraft Varthaman will operate as part of his new role.
