Traditionally, women from the medical field have reached the rank of Air Vice Marshal in the IAF. However, Shakti Sharma has broken barriers by achieving this coveted post, despite a non medical background. The Indian Air Force shared that Sharma will now serve as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters. 

Who is AVM Shakti Sharma?  

AVM Shakti Sharma is a veteran officer in the Indian Air Force. She recently made history by reaching the rank of Air Vice Marshal (AVM) in the IAF. Sharma is also the first woman from a non medical background to reach AVM or equivalent ranks in any of the Indian military’s 3 forces. According to the Defense Ministry,  Sharma started her appointment as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1.

AVM Shakti Sharma started her career after getting commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994. Notably, she served as Principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala and became the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School. 

She has also handled assignments at Training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and air headquarters. Sharma achieved the post of AVM (Education) in early September.
