General Dhiraj Seth, the chief of the Indian Army is currently on a four day visit to Nepal. And during a grand investiture ceremony in Kathmandu this afternoon, he was honoured with the rank of general in the country’s army.
Who is General Dhiraj Seth?
General Dhiraj Seth is the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army. He took charge on June 30, 2026 and succeeded General Upendra Dwivedi. He was conferred with the honorary rank of general in the Nepalese army by the country’s president Ramchandra Paudel.

General Dhiraj Seth has enjoyed an illustrious career, with 4 decades of military experience. He joined the army in 1986. General Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps and served with the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse). His operational experience includes service in the desert sector, western theatre and counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
He has commanded an Armoured Regiment, an Armoured Brigade and a Counter-Insurgency Force. Some of his other prominent roles (apart from Indian Army Chief) include the Commander of XXI Corps; General Officer Commanding for Delhi Area, GOC-in-C of South Western Command; GOC-in-C of Southern Command and the Vice COAS.
In his current role as the Indian Army chief, General Seth is responsible for ensuring operational preparedness, modernisation and strategic readiness.

General Dhiraj Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun and the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, the Army War College i Mhow & the National Defence College (NDC) in New Delhi
He also attended the Command and Staff Course in Paris, France and the International Defense Acquisition Management Course at the Naval Postgraduate School, USA. While attending theNDC College in New Delhi, General Seth was recognised as the best student of his 2006 batch.
