Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide and have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death. According to preliminary information, Dhankar is believed to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot injury using his service pistol. However, officials said the exact cause and circumstances of his death are still under investigation.

Dhankar was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GB) Hospital in Agartala after the incident. Doctors said he was brought to the hospital without any signs of life. Speaking to reporters, hospital official Pradip Bhowmik said the medical team performed CPR for over 40 minutes but could not revive him. He was declared dead at 12:48 pm. Doctors added that the post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death.

Police have launched an official investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining all circumstances surrounding the death, and further details are expected after the investigation and post-mortem report.

Who Was Anurag Dhankar?

Anurag Dhankar was a 1994 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He took charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura in May 2025, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Before becoming the state’s police chief, he served as Director General (Intelligence) in Tripura and had also worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he handled several high profile investigations.

Dhankar’s sudden death has shocked the police department as well as government officials in Tripura. Senior officers and officials have expressed grief over the loss of one of the state’s senior most IPS officers.
