According to sources from the Institute for Psychological Health (IPH) in Thane, renowned psychiatrist, author, and social activist Dr. Anand Nadkarni died at the age of 67 following a protracted illness. Dr. Nadkarni, who is widely recognized as one of Maharashtra’s most significant voices in mental healthcare, leaves behind a decades-long legacy of literary contributions, community outreach, and mental health awareness. 

Dr Anand Nadkarni:  Pioneer in Mental Health Awareness

Born in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district in 1958, Dr Anand Madhusudan Nadkarni dedicated over four decades to psychiatry and emotional wellness. He completed his MBBS, MD in Psychological Medicine, and Diploma in Psychological Medicine from Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital in Mumbai. He reportedly topped Mumbai University in his MD examination before beginning his psychiatric practice in 1986.

Over the years, he became known for making mental health discussions accessible and relatable to the general public, especially in Marathi-speaking communities. His work focused on removing the stigma around psychological disorders and encouraging open conversations about emotional well-being. 

Founder of the Institute for Psychological Health (IPH)

In 1990, Dr Nadkarni co-founded the Institute for Psychological Health, popularly known as IPH, in Thane. The institute grew into one of Maharashtra’s leading mental healthcare organisations, housing more than 70 mental health professionals under one roof. 

IPH became widely respected for its community-centric mental health initiatives, counselling services, support groups, educational workshops, and rehabilitation programmes. The organisation also launched projects aimed at adolescents, parents, teachers, and working professionals to promote emotional wellbeing across all sections of society.

Apart from being a psychiatrist, Dr Nadkarni was also a prolific Marathi author who wrote extensively on psychology, philosophy, self-growth, and society. Reports suggest he authored over 17 books, several of which were translated into English and Braille. Some of his writings were also included in Maharashtra state textbooks.

He was deeply associated with theatre, cinema, music, and public speaking. Dr Nadkarni served as a consultant for acclaimed Marathi films like Devrai and Kadachit, both of which explored psychological and emotional themes. He was also known for mentoring students, artists, athletes, and corporate leaders. 

Dr Anand Nadkarni: Role in Muktangan & Addiction Rehabilitation

Dr Nadkarni was also among the founding figures behind Muktangan De-addiction Centre, a Pune-based rehabilitation and de-addiction centre that became a major support system for individuals struggling with substance abuse. His efforts helped bring addiction rehabilitation into mainstream social conversations at a time when the issue was rarely discussed openly.

Following his death, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed grief and described Dr Nadkarni as a “multifaceted personality” who dedicated his life to mental health awareness and social welfare. Colleagues and admirers across Maharashtra also remembered him as a compassionate doctor who successfully blended psychiatry with literature, philosophy, and social activism. 

According to reports, Dr Nadkarni had been admitted to a Mumbai hospital before his passing. He is survived by his wife, son, and other family members.
