A late-night phone call, desperate screams, and a chilling confession marked the final moments of a young Delhi Police constable whose life ended inside her own home. Kajal, a 27-year-old SWAT commando, died days after she was brutally assaulted by her husband during a domestic dispute in southwest Delhi. What unfolded on January 22 was not just a violent attack but a horrifying sequence of events that her family says they can never forget.
Kajal’s death has shaken the police fraternity and raised serious questions about domestic violence, dowry harassment, and the safety of women even within uniformed services.
Kajal hailed from Ganaur in Haryana and joined the Delhi Police in 2022 as a constable. Known for her discipline and determination, she completed commando-level training and earned a posting in the elite SWAT unit of the Special Cell.
Her family said she took pride in her uniform and dreamed of building a secure future. Kajal’s brother, Nikhil, also serves in the Delhi Police and is posted in the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Parliament Street.
Despite her professional strength, Kajal allegedly faced domestic troubles after her marriage to Ankur Chaudhary, a situation that would ultimately turn fatal.
According to investigators, the incident took place at the couple’s residence in Dwarka Mor following a heated argument over domestic issues and dowry demands. During the altercation, Ankur Chaudhary allegedly attacked Kajal using a metal dumbbell and repeatedly smashed her head against a door frame.
Moments after the assault began, Ankur reportedly called Kajal’s brother and placed the phone on speaker.
“My sister took the phone and tried to explain what had happened. Chaudhary got offended by some remarks she made. He snatched the phone and asked me to record the conversation as evidence, saying he was going to kill my sister. I then heard her screaming before the call got disconnected,” Nikhil told HT.
The call abruptly ended, leaving the family terrified and helpless.
Just minutes later, Ankur allegedly called again.
Nikhil said Ankur told him that Kajal was dead and asked him to come and collect her body.
“When I reached Delhi around midnight, his family had already arrived, and he had admitted my sister to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead,” Nikhil added.
Police said Kajal had suffered catastrophic head injuries by the time she reached the hospital.
Doctors at a private hospital near Dwarka declared Kajal brain dead shortly after she was admitted on the night of January 22. On January 25, her family shifted her to another private hospital in Ghaziabad’s Nehru Nagar for advanced treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Kajal succumbed to her injuries at around 6 am on Tuesday, January 27.
Her death formally transformed the case into one of murder, prompting further legal action against her husband.
Ankur Chaudhary, 28, faces serious allegations of domestic violence and murder. Police said he attacked Kajal during a dispute and later made incriminating calls to her brother.
Investigators are examining allegations of dowry harassment and repeated domestic conflicts. The police are also analysing call records, medical reports, and forensic evidence recovered from the house.
Kajal’s killing has triggered widespread anger because she served in a high-risk police unit trained to handle armed threats. Her death highlights how domestic violence can overpower even the strongest individuals behind closed doors.
Women’s rights activists and police associations have demanded swift justice and stricter safeguards for women facing abuse, regardless of profession.
