Tamil Nadu is witnessing intense political activity after actor-turned-politician Vijay led his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to a massive breakthrough in the 2026 Assembly elections. Although TVK emerged as the single largest party, it still fell short of the majority required to independently form the government.
TVK Vijay Form Government in Tamil Nadu?
In its very first Assembly election, the two-year-old TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, significantly changing Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The result also pushed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam out of power after just one term in office.
However, the majority mark in the Assembly stands at 118 seats. Adding to the challenge, Vijay is expected to vacate one of the two constituencies he won, which could further reduce TVK’s effective strength and increase its dependence on post-poll allies.
Congress Extends Support to Vijay-Led TVK
The Indian National Congress extended support to TVK after senior Congress leaders reportedly met Vijay at the party headquarters in Chennai. The development triggered a sharp political reaction from the DMK, which accused Congress of weakening a long-standing alliance and damaging opposition unity ahead of future national elections. Political observers believe Congress support could play a key role in helping Vijay move closer to the majority figure needed to form the government.
AIADMK’s Support Talks With TVK Collapse
At the same time, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, reportedly explored the possibility of offering unconditional support to TVK to ensure political stability in the state.
Sources said communication between the two parties began soon after the election results were announced. However, the talks reportedly broke down after AIADMK leaders claimed that the TVK camp did not respond for several hours. Following the failed discussions, AIADMK withdrew its support offer and clarified that it would not align with the DMK either.
Vijay Meets Governor to Stake Claim to Form Government
Amid the fast-changing political situation, Vijay met R. N. Ravi to stake claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu. According to reports, Vijay informed the governor that he had the necessary support required to form the next government. However, sources indicated that the governor asked for formal letters of support from MLAs before moving ahead with the swearing-in process. The next few days are expected to be crucial as TVK attempts to gather enough backing to cross the majority mark.
Smaller Parties Yet to Announce Final Decision
Several smaller political parties are yet to officially announce whether they will support TVK or remain with the DMK alliance. Parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have not taken a final stand so far.
Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League and Left parties have publicly continued their support for the DMK. Political analysts believe the final decisions of these smaller parties could decide whether Vijay successfully forms the next government in Tamil Nadu.
MK Stalin Says DMK Will Sit in Opposition
Outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin indicated that the DMK was prepared to sit in the opposition. Stalin reportedly said the party would “watch without disturbing for six months” while also questioning whether TVK would be able to fulfil the major promises made during the election campaign. His remarks have added further political tension to the ongoing government formation process.
Tamil Nadu Awaits Final Decision on Next Government
As alliance talks continue and uncertainty over numbers remains, Tamil Nadu’s political atmosphere has become increasingly tense. With TVK still short of the majority mark and several parties yet to reveal their final position, the race to form the next government in the state remains wide open. All eyes are now on Vijay’s next political move, possible alliance discussions, and the governor’s decision regarding government formation in Tamil Nadu.
