CBI charges five in RG Kar financial scam

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation has officially filed a charge sheet in a case involving alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Submitted on November 29 to the Special Judge, CBI Court in Alipore, the chargesheet names five individuals, including the institution’s former Principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh.
The accused listed in the chargesheet are:

1. Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College.
2. Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, a former house staff member of the hospital.
3. Biplab Singha, the owner of M/s Maa Tara Traders.
4. Suman Hazra, the proprietor of M/s Hazra Medical.
5. Afsar Ali Khan, additional security personnel and an associate of M/s Eshan Cafe.
   The case originated following an order by the Calcutta High Court to investigate alleged financial mismanagement within the college and hospital. The CBI took up the inquiry to identify lapses and irregularities linked to the accused individuals.
   Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who was already under investigation for corruption, also came under scrutiny earlier this year in connection with the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital. The young doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar room on August 9, triggering a nationwide outcry and demands for justice. Shortly afterward, a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested in the case.
   However, Roy has repeatedly claimed his innocence, alleging that he was framed. During a court hearing on November 11, he publicly accused former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal of orchestrating the conspiracy.
   Speaking to reporters, Roy declared, “It was Vineet Goyal who conspired and framed me. I was threatened, and several senior officers were involved.”

The investigation into both the financial irregularities and the murder case continues to evolve. While the chargesheet addresses the corruption allegations, the unresolved questions surrounding the trainee doctor’s death and Roy’s claims of a conspiracy involving high-ranking officials keep the spotlight on the case.

Both matters remain critical for ensuring justice and accountability.
