Somvati Amavasya 2026: Puja Rituals
On this special occasion, pilgrims perform a holy bath early in the morning and fast throughout the day. People visit to Lord temples and offer milk, water, bel leaves, flowers, and puja to seek god’s blessings. Hindu married women pray to the peepal tree (Sacred Fig or Bodhi tree) by giving water to it, tying a thread to it, performing a parikrama (walking in a circle around a sacred object), and praying for the long life and good health of their husbands. Pitru Tarpan (a sacred Hindu ritual of offering water and specific elements to one’s departed ancestors) and donation of food, clothes, or money to poor people is considered highly auspicious.
