New Delhi; The Government of India has approved housing assistance worth nearly ₹5,000 crore for Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), with 3.8 lakh new houses sanctioned for the state, as the Centre stepped up support for flood-affected families and farmers. The decisions were taken during a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Chouhan formally handed over the approval for 3.8 lakh new PMAY-G houses to Assam. He also assured the Chief Minister that additional houses would be sanctioned for flood-affected areas to facilitate the early rehabilitation and reconstruction of families whose homes have been damaged by the floods.
Further, to ensure that eligible beneficiaries are not excluded, the Centre has extended the PMAY-G survey period by another 15 days. The move is aimed at enabling authorities to identify and include flood-affected families who may have been left out of the housing assistance process.
Moreover, the Centre has also decided to extend PMAY benefits to eligible tea garden workers in Assam through a digital survey after they receive land pattas. The initiative is expected to expand access to permanent housing among tea garden communities across the state.
Meanwhile, the meeting also focused extensively on the impact of floods on agriculture and the support required for affected farmers. Action plans worth ₹832.70 crore under the Agriculture Unnati Yojana and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) have been approved for flood-affected farmers. In addition, the Centre has approved ₹33.36 crore for agricultural mechanisation and ₹96.87 crore under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).
Chouhan also handed over a sanction letter for ₹139 crore under RKVY to Assam to strengthen agricultural investment and promote sustainable farming practices in the state.
Following the meeting, Chouhan said on X that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government stood with the people of Assam with complete sensitivity during the ongoing crisis. He said the discussions covered the damage caused by the floods, difficulties faced by farmers and issues related to rural development, while reiterating the Centre’s commitment to supporting Assam during the difficult period.
On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Shivraj Singh Chouhan and the Union Government for according priority to Assam and taking swift decisions to support the state. He Welcomed the approval of 3.8 lakh PMAY-G houses, involving an investment of nearly ₹5,000 crore, the Chief Minister said the assistance would provide crucial support to families affected by the floods. He also welcomed the assurance of additional houses for flood-affected areas and the proposed expansion of housing support for tea garden communities. Sarma thanked the Union Minister and the Government of India for standing with Assam during the state’s flood response and for extending timely assistance for rehabilitation, agriculture and rural development.
