Tamil Nadu CM Oath Ceremony 2026: Actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to officially begin his tenure as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today after successfully gathering the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai at 10 a.m., where several senior leaders from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) will also take oath as ministers.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar invited Vijay to form the government after he submitted letters of support from alliance partners, ending days of political uncertainty in the state. Vijay has also been directed to prove his majority in the Assembly on or before May 13.

Vijay to Lead Coalition Government With Congress and Other Allies

The new Tamil Nadu government will be led by TVK in alliance with the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

The coalition crossed the majority mark after VCK and IUML extended support on Saturday, increasing the alliance tally to 120 MLAs. Soon after receiving the backing, Vijay met the Governor at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and handed over formal support letters from all alliance parties. Senior Congress and Left leaders also accompanied Vijay during the crucial meeting that paved the way for the formation of the new government.

Vijay Creates History in Tamil Nadu Politics

Vijay’s rise to power marks a major political shift in Tamil Nadu. His government will become the first administration in nearly 60 years that is not led by either the DMK or the AIADMK. The 51-year-old actor launched TVK just two years ago, but the party quickly emerged as a powerful political force in the state.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, TVK won 108 seats, making it the single-largest party in the House. However, the party initially fell short of the majority figure required to form the government. Since Vijay won from two constituencies and is expected to vacate one seat, the alliance needed additional support to comfortably cross the majority mark.

How Vijay Managed to Reach the Majority Mark To Form Tamil Nadu Government

Vijay spent the last several days holding talks with various political parties and meeting the Governor multiple times to prove majority support. The Congress party, which secured five seats in the elections, was among the first to support TVK. Later, the CPI and CPI(M), which won two seats each, also joined Vijay’s alliance.

Even after the Left parties extended support, the coalition remained short of the required numbers. The breakthrough finally came after VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan announced support for Vijay’s coalition. Soon after, the IUML also backed TVK, helping the alliance comfortably cross the majority mark with 120 MLAs.

Four Meetings With Governor Before Government Formation

Vijay reportedly met Governor Arlekar four times during the process of government formation. During the earlier meetings, the Governor informed Vijay that he needed written proof of majority support before he could be invited to form the government.

“During the meeting, the Hon’ble Governor explained that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, essential for forming the government, has not been established,” Lok Bhavan had said in an earlier statement.

After receiving written assurances from alliance partners, Vijay attended a final meeting with the Governor on Saturday evening, after which he was officially appointed Chief Minister-designate.

TVK’s Rapid Rise Changes Tamil Nadu Political Landscape

The formation of the new government is being seen as one of the biggest political developments in Tamil Nadu in recent decades.

For years, Tamil Nadu politics had largely remained dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s successful entry into politics has now disrupted that long-standing political structure.

The actor-politician’s popularity, combined with strong support from alliance partners, helped TVK emerge as a major force in its very first Assembly election.

With the swearing-in ceremony taking place today, all eyes are now on Vijay’s first decisions as Chief Minister and the direction his coalition government will take in the coming months.
