Idol’s idol: The lesser known figures who shape a success story

opinionGuest ColumnistsIdol’s idol: The lesser known figures who shape a success story

We all have someone or some people in our lives who we idolise. We look up to them to show us a way in life. These people inspire us, guide us and make us understand many aspects of life that we may not know. They may have gained experiences in life either due to their age or because they have an expertise in that particular field. They could be anyone, someone you know personally or maybe just some person you see or hear about. They could be your family members, friends or film stars, sports persons, people from various walks of life.

These are the people who have achieved success at various levels, some are very rich, some very popular. Success can be of various types, some are very popular in their locality or in their country and even world famous, either because of their profession or the service they have rendered to the society or just due to the excellence they have achieved in their field of choice.

But even these people started out in life as unknowns and then became famous and I am sure all these people too looked up to somebody; they too have someone whom they idolise.
We all as a natural instinct look up to someone famous and consider them as our idols, but not all idols are famous or popular or rich, they are just present in this world to impart their knowledge and experience which makes people who they are. These people play a very important role in the success of the successful. Everyone knows the idols but very few know the “idol’s idol” because they are not famous or successful as the Idols they help create.

We have many examples of such people and I am going to mention a few which will throw light on these hidden idols.

There are many successful sportsmen who have gone on to achieve great laurels in their choice of sport and some of them have been coached by coaches right from the time they first began to learn that particular sport. They went on to make records and became very famous but as compared to them, their coaches may not have made records or achieved a lot but they created these great achievers who we all idolise. When you read about these famous people you will also read that they always look up to these coaches and they are their Idols. A famous cricketer, who is an Idol for many, considers his coach as his idol.

We all as a natural instinct look up to someone famous and consider them as our idols, but not all idols are famous or popular or rich, they are just present in this world to impart their knowledge and experience which makes people who they are. These people play a very important role in the success of the successful.

When you read interviews of very famous actresses, you will find them saying how they idolise some actresses, especially the ones who do not work for the silver screen but act only in stage plays or dramas, they learn from these actresses and this has led them to their path of success.

A personal experience I would like to share is about my father. My father is my Idol, he continues to serve the people of our society and has achieved many laurels and is highly respected. When I was a child, I would always see people come up to him for advice and I would hear many of them tell him how they idolised him. I had never seen him seek advice or take help from any one; it was always he who gave. This made me wonder, did my father ever need any guidance or did he ever discuss his thoughts? My questions were answered one day when I accompanied him to a gentlemen’s house and here for the first time I heard my father talking and discussing issues of knowledge with someone else. This person was someone who my father very fondly called “Guruji”, I got this feeling from the way my father spoke to him, that this person was probably his idol. Guruji is someone who was known to the people of our locality. He was not famous or very rich but a very knowledgeable, loving and caring person.

There are people around us who are not famous or rich or known but there are Idols who look up to them. When we learn from our idols and thank them for inspiring us, we should also thank these unknown idols because they have contributed to the success of the people who we look up to.
The next time you thank your idol, remember to thank your “idol’s idol” too.
