The state Information Commission has directed the Jammu and Kashmir government to preserve old government orders/records of the Dogra Maharajas’ era after identifying their relevance. The SIC has directed the Chief Secretary to take steps to preserve the significant government orders/records of the Maharajas’ time. State Chief Information Commissioner G.R. Sofi has directed the government to ask all the public authorities in the state to transfer the relevant orders to the state directorate of archives within a reasonable time-frame. These directions were passed after a person asked under RTI whether there was any ban under any order or act on the purchase of non-agricultural land in J&K by a person who is not a permanent resident of the state. The J&K law department found the relevant information in the directorate of archives and found that the Section 139 of transfer of the Property Act and Section 35-A of Constitution of India do not allow any such purchases.
