NGT snubs J&K for poor waste management

The National Green Tribunal has threatened to take punitive action against Srinagar Municipal Corporation after it failed to clear less than 2000 metric tonne of waste from the Achan dumping site on the outskirts of Srinagar, where the city’s 4,000 metric tonne of waste is dumped.

The locals living around Achan dumping site are not allowing Srinagar Municipal Corporation employees to dump garbage there, as a result of which more than 1,600 metric tonne of garbage are staying scattered on Srinagar’s streets.

The NGT on Tuesday also slapped a show cause notice on Srinagar Municipal Corporation as to why environmental compensation should not be imposed on them for having trash scattered in the city.  On the directions of Governor N.N. Vohra, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Asghar Samoon has been directed to identify additional sites, at least two each in North Kashmir and South Kashmir, to meet the future requirements of solid waste management.
