Panic has gripped the entire population of Jammu and Kashmir following a recent study predicting a major earthquake which will affect more than 60 lakh people in the state who are currently living in high risk Seismic Zone V. Governor N.N. Vohra has written to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to prepare her administration for any possible disaster and its ramifications on the ground. Vohra in his letter pointed out that the September 2014 floods had exposed the unpreparedness of the administration to tackle a natural disaster.
Recently a study by Oregon State University has said that a major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or greater may strike J&K. The study was concluded after the latest geological mapping in the Himalayan Mountains of the state. The study said a fault has been building up pressure for some time at Reasi in Jammu. This has triggered panic among the people who have not forgotten the disastrous 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
