College dropouts, students form majority of recent car thieves: Survey

Car theft may seem like an unlikely occupation for college dropouts and students. However, according to data released by the South-west district police, 55% of the car thieves arrested in the past four months were “first time offenders” aged between 18-25 years. These youth came to Delhi for higher education and job opportunities but ended up becoming thieves. According to the survey data, around 58% of the vehicles are lifted from residential areas, 11% from commercial complexes, 4% from parks and open spaces, 21% from roadside, and 6% from parking lots. In various RWAs and MWAs with multiple entry-exit points, the police were able to round up the criminals by the simple measure of barricading one or two gates.
