State-of-the-art modern and hygienic toilet facilities were inaugurated on Saturday at the Mumbai Police headquarters here as part of the Adar Poonawalla Clean City (APCC) movement founded by Adar Poonawalla who is the CEO and executive director of the Serum Institute of India. Founded in 1966 by his father, Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, it is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by number of doses produced. Dr Cyrus Poonawalla is the chairman of the Poonawalla Group which includes the Serum Institute of India.
The toilets, equipped with modern facilities and comfortable amenities keeping in view users’ requirements, were inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The toilets will be located at 10 key locations of Mumbai in the first phase, after which more such toilets will be made not only in Mumbai but across the country under the APCC movement which has been undertaken at an initial cost of Rs 100 crore for the first phase. Appreciating Poonawalla’s efforts, CM Fadnavis said, “We need more private participation to come forward and join hands in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make India garbage free. The government is trying to make the country open defecation free. Proper sanitation facilities are required at a larger scale and these modern toilets are an example of addressing the sanitation issues nationwide.”
