Party prepares standalone push ahead of 2027 Punjab polls.

After securing a historic victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has shifted its focus to Punjab, gearing up for a major political showdown with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in the 2027 Assembly elections. Party leaders believe the Bengal win has boosted the morale of workers and demonstrated that the BJP can emerge as a strong force even in states where it previously had limited influence.

Officials and workers of the party said, “Bengal ki jeet hamari hai, ab Punjab ki baari hai” (Bengal has been won, now it is Punjab’s turn).

Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar described the Bengal victory as “a message” that has “inspired new hope among the people of Punjab.”

In an interaction with The Sunday Guardian, Jakhar compared the situations in West Bengal and Punjab, stating that both states are grappling with similar socio-economic and law-and-order concerns. According to him, the BJP is positioning itself as the answer to these challenges.

“If the BJP can put an end to the state-sponsored oppression in Bengal and curb hooliganism elsewhere, then Punjab too should give the party an opportunity,” Jakhar said.

He further emphasized that Punjab holds special importance for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that the central leadership is committed to ensuring the state’s development and stability.

Referring to Punjab’s strategic location along the Pakistan border, Jakhar argued that a “double-engine government” would improve coordination between the Centre and the state on matters of security and governance.

“Punjab is a highly sensitive border state where the threat of terrorism is always a concern. A double-engine government would make it easier to address these issues effectively at the grassroots level,” he stated.

Jakhar also highlighted his efforts to strengthen the BJP’s organizational presence across Punjab since taking over as state president. He said his primary focus has been to expand the party’s reach among ordinary Punjabis and establish a stronger grassroots connect.
