NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police have put in place an extensive, multi-layered security arrangement for the 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path, combining advanced technology, specialised forces and large-scale deployment of personnel to ensure a safe and seamless national event.
This year, the enclosures at the venue have been renamed after the Indian rivers to facilitate easier identification and movement of guests. Officials said the move is aimed at improving navigation within the venue and easing crowd management.
Advanced electronic surveillance forms the backbone of the security plan. Over 3,000 CCTV cameras fitted with Facial Recognition System (FRS) technology have been installed in and around Kartavya Path for continuous monitoring. The cameras are connected to more than 30 control rooms, enabling real-time tracking and rapid response to any suspicious activity.
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Delhi Police have deployed AI-enabled Meta smart glasses equipped with an integrated facial recognition system. These wearable devices, featuring built-in cameras, speakers and artificial intelligence, are linked in real time to police databases containing details of criminals, proclaimed offenders and suspects. The glasses can scan faces in crowded areas and match them with stored records within seconds, alerting personnel instantly without interrupting public movement. “The technology enables immediate verification and swift action on the ground,” a senior police officer said.
To safeguard the airspace and surrounding zones, specialised anti-drone units and sniper teams have been positioned atop high-rise buildings near Kartavya Path. These teams will keep a close watch on aerial activity and provide an additional layer of security.
Physical security arrangements have also been significantly reinforced. Around 10,000 police personnel will be deployed in the New Delhi district, with paramilitary forces forming part of a robust, multi-layered security cordon across the area.
Authorities will implement three levels of physical checks for pedestrians, along with similar screening measures for vehicles.
Ahead of the celebrations, the police are also conducting intensive verification drives across the district, covering hotels, guest houses, tenants and domestic staff, to eliminate any potential security threats. Officials said the integrated strategy—combining technology, manpower and public cooperation—has been designed to ensure peaceful and secure Republic Day celebrations, while allowing citizens to participate in the national event without inconvenience.
