Chandigarh: In a display of courage and swift action, sappers of Kharga Corps rescued a woman who had recently undergone a caesarean operation along with her 15-day-old baby from flood-affected Dhangai village in Gurdaspur district on Saturday.
The mother and child had been trapped for the past four days on the first floor of a completely submerged house. Once alerted to their plight, the rescue team immediately moved in and reached them using an improvised ladder. Braving strong water currents, the sappers evacuated them in a boat for nearly three kilometres before transferring them into an army vehicle. The vehicle then navigated 15 kilometres of submerged and difficult terrain to bring them to safety.
During the evacuation, the army provided milk and water to the infant and ensured that the mother received proper care. Both were later reunited with their relatives at Fatehgarh Churian in Gurdaspur.
The operation once again underlined the crucial role of the army in saving lives as Punjab continues to battle devastating floods that have cut off several villages and left thousands stranded.
