SRINAGAR: A brief but intense uproar was witnessed in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday after BJP MLA Shagun Parihar made controversial remarks alleging the neglect of Hindu communities in her Kishtwar constituency.

While participating in a discussion on regional development, Parihar stated, “In our Kishtwar, we are Rashtrawadi Hindu log and we are being neglected; no work is being done.” Her statement immediately drew sharp reactions from members across party lines, prompting the Speaker to intervene and restore order.

The Speaker addressed Parihar directly, reminding her of her responsibilities as a new member of the House. “You are a first-time MLA. You have big goals to achieve and must focus on hard work and constructive discussion,” the Speaker said firmly, adding that sensitive matters must be raised with decorum and in the spirit of unity.

Several legislators expressed concern that such remarks could trigger unnecessary communal tension and deflect attention from real developmental issues. Others emphasized the importance of maintaining a non-divisive tone within the Assembly.

Parihar, who was visibly emotional, later clarified that her intention was to highlight the lack of infrastructure and development in specific pockets of Kishtwar, where, she claimed, certain communities have been ignored despite repeated appeals.

However, her use of religious identity in the political space stirred discomfort among several opposition and ruling alliance members.

The Speaker reiterated that all MLAs must engage in disciplined and inclusive debate to reflect the aspirations of the people. He cautioned members against using divisive language and urged focus on collective development goals for all communities across Jammu and Kashmir.

The session resumed after the brief disruption.
