New Delhi: The Congress party may change its strategy for the elections in the new year. According to sources, the Congress will form alliances according to the states and will focus on local and issues which affect common man. After the major defeat in the Bihar elections, there have been discussions within the party about changing its strategy. The Congress is also avoiding giving too much importance to caste politics. There are indications that the party will also give less importance to the issue of vote rigging in the states.

Assembly elections are to be held in states like Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu in next four months. After this, elections are to be held in important states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab in early 2027. The Congress has been out of power in these states for a long time. The working committee meeting held on Sunday also indicated that issues like MNREGA and Aravalli will be raised in these states.

Among the states where elections are to be held next year, Kerala and Assam are the most important for the Congress because the party faces direct contest in these states. In Assam, the Congress party is pitted against the BJP, while in Kerala, it faces the Left parties, a major constituent of the INDIA alliance. The issues and the nature of the fight are different in both states. Neither caste politics nor vote rigging can become a major issue in either state.

The Congress will focus on local issues. In Kerala, the focus will be entirely on the failures of the Left government. In both Kerala and Assam, the Congress will try to bring smaller local parties together to prevent the opposition vote from splitting. However, the situation in both states has completely changed in the last ten years. The BJP has made inroads in Kerala, even securing a mayor’s position in the local body elections. This means the BJP will be involved in triangular contests in some seats, which will only harm the Congress.
