Congress calls meeting on Nov 18 to discuss SIR exercise in 12 states, UTs

Congress calls a November 18 meeting to review the SIR exercise in 12 states and UTs as it plans to step up protests over alleged vote irregularities.

New Delhi: With the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise ongoing in 12 states and Union territories by the Election Commission, the Congress has called the meeting of the state incahrges, presidents, CLPs and senior leaders of these states on Tuesday to review the developments, amid plans to intensify its protest against the Election Commission on ‘vote chori’.

Congress sources on Sunday revealed that party's general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal has called the meeting of the state unit chiefs, CLPs, secretaries and senior leaders of the states and union territories where the SIR exercise is being taken up by the poll panel. 

The source revealed that the meeting has been decided on November 18 where several discussions will take place that how the party will move towards the SIR exercise. 

The Congress leadership is expected to review the exercise in these states and UTs where the distribution of enumeration forms have started on November 4.

The Commission has stated that 49.73 crore or 97.52% of 50.91 crore enumeration forms have been distributed till Sunday 3 p.m.

The source disclised that the state leaders will apprise the party leadership about the exercise in their respective states and the monitoring system they have put in place and how they are involved at the ground level in ensuring that voters are provided assistance.

At the meeting, sources said leaders will also be given instructions on how to build momentum against the SIR in their respective states and UTs. 

The Congress had earlier opposed the SIR exercise in Bihar and also took out Voter adhikar yatra highlighting the 'vote chori', where the Mahagatbandhan suffered a massive defeat as the ruling NDA formed the government with a thumping majority by winning 202 out of 243 assembly seats. 

The Election Commission has announced the second phase of SIR in Andaman and Nicobar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

The states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Pudducherry a UT will go to polls next year. 

Earlier Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi himself had raised questions on the electoral rolls in Bihar, a day before the voting for the first phase.
