Congress Flags Rs 63,000 crore DJB Dues Crisis

New Delhi: In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav has demanded immediate action to recover an enormous Rs 63,000 crore in outstanding dues owed to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) by various departments of the Central and Delhi governments, as well as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Yadav asserted that the massive accumulation of unpaid bills has severely undermined the DJB’s financial stability and disrupted water supply services across the national capital.

He asserted that the DJB, already weighed down by debt and rampant corruption inherited from the previous Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party administration, is struggling to cater to Delhi’s increasing water demands. Yadav accused various government departments of ignoring their legal responsibilities, even as ordinary citizens are subjected to inflated water bills and strict penalties for minor delays in payment.

Calling the situation an injustice to the people of Delhi, Yadav wrote that while defaulter departments are being let off the hook, law-abiding consumers are harassed and penalized. He further alleged that in an attempt to cover operational losses resulting from gross administrative inefficiency, deep-rooted corruption, and failure to recover dues, the DJB is unfairly shifting the burden onto paying consumers.

Yadav outlined a detailed list of major defaulters contributing to the enormous dues owed to the DJB. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) tops the chart with unpaid bills totaling Rs 26,147 crore, followed by Indian Railways with dues amounting to Rs 21,530.5 crore. The Delhi Health Department and Delhi Police are yet to pay Rs 6,684 crore and Rs 6,097 crore, respectively.
