The party stated that in a compassionate gesture of solidarity, the Indian National Congress today distributed financial assistance to the families affected by the tragic stampede in Karur.

“A total of Rs 1,02,50,000 (One Crore Two Lakh Fifty Thousand) was disbursed, with Rs 2,50,000 provided to each of the 41 bereaved families,” the party stated.

The Congress said that the initiative reflects the party’s commitment to stand by the people during times of pain and loss.

The financial aid was handed over to the families during a visit by senior party leaders, it said.

Earlier in the day, Venugopal in a post on X said, “The tragedy in Karur is beyond imagination. The families who have lost their loved ones are inconsolable. In reality, the whole of Tamil Nadu and India are in pain.”

He stated that he visited Karur along with several party leaders, MPs to send the message to the victims that “you are not alone, the whole country is with you in this difficult time”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tamil Nadu,” Venugopal added.

At least 41 people, mostly women and children died during a stampede in the programme of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

On Saturday evening, people had started fainting at the heavily packed rally as the crowd went out of control, forcing the actor-turned-politician to pause his speech midway.
