NEW DELHI: Opposition accused the Delhi government of wasting public money after the five-day winter session of the Delhi Assembly concluded without any meaningful discussion on public issues, amid repeated disruptions and chaos in the House. The Delhi Congress alleged that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were responsible for stalling proceedings, rendering the entire session unproductive and causing a significant loss to the exchequer. The party claimed that neither side showed sincere concern for Delhi’s development or the welfare of its people.

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav sharply criticised the BJP government and demanded that the expenditure incurred on the five-day session be recovered from the Chief Minister, as no substantive deliberations took place. He said key issues affecting citizens, including air pollution, cleaning of the Yamuna , promotion of green energy, road infrastructure and cleanliness, were completely sidelined.

Yadav alleged that for the first time, a full Assembly session ended without any productive outcome. He also accused the BJP of protecting former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-AAP ministers by not tabling a single Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report related to alleged corruption during the previous AAP regime, indicating a lack of intent to ensure accountability. Yadav said the BJP’s refusal to debate Delhi’s deteriorating air quality reflected a disregard for public health, holding both the BJP and AAP responsible for failing over the past 12 years to tackle pollution. He alleged that discussions on pollution were deliberately avoided to conceal the government’s failures.

He also raised concerns over contaminated drinking water in areas such as Dwarka and Nangloi, citing Delhi Jal Board reports, and warned that continued inaction could lead to a major crisis. Yadav further said the BJP’s election promises lacked credibility, pointing to the absence of clarity on the proposed Rs 2,500 monthly honorarium for women, subsidised LPG cylinders, free festive cylinders and the Pink Card free bus travel scheme.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party accused the BJP of deliberately sidestepping issues affecting Delhi residents and wasting the Assembly session through repeated disruptions. Senior AAP leader and Chief Whip Sanjeev Jha alleged bias on the part of the Speaker, claiming that Opposition MLAs were marshalled out of the House for demanding a ban on a fake video until a forensic report was submitted. He said that instead of addressing pressing issues such as pollution, contaminated water, cold-related deaths and law-and-order concerns, the government silenced the Opposition and used the Assembly primarily for self-praise.

Jha added that although the BJP had promised an open discussion on pollution, proceedings were derailed day after day over the fake video controversy, preventing any debate. Questioning the government’s intent, Jha said the BJP spoke of holding discussions while repeatedly ejecting the Opposition from the House, showing little interest in addressing public concerns. He said three days of disruptions followed by the mass marshaling of Opposition MLAs highlighted the ruling party’s disregard for Delhi’s problems. He further alleged that the government avoided discussions on severe pollution, cold-related deaths, poor conditions in night shelters and worsening law and order, citing an alleged assault in Laxmi Nagar involving individuals linked to BJP leaders.

Jha said the Opposition was denied the opportunity to raise issues or offer solutions, accusing the Speaker of suppressing the voice of the people. AAP MLA Jarnail Singh also criticised the Speaker, alleging double standards in the conduct of House proceedings. He claimed that BJP MLAs violated rules without facing action, while AAP MLAs were marshalled out merely for standing up to speak. Singh urged the Speaker to maintain the dignity and impartiality of his office and ensure equal treatment for all legislators.
