Authorities seek seamless coordination and minimum disruption to commuters during the September 12-13 gathering.
With the national capital gearing up to host the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam from September 12 to 13, civic and security agencies have intensified preparations to ensure that the city presents a clean, green and secure face to international delegates and visitors. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has put in place a comprehensive civic preparedness plan covering sanitation, beautification, horticulture, infrastructure, electricity, public health and round-the-clock monitoring across the NDMC area. At the same time, the Delhi Police has stepped up coordination with neighbouring states and Union Territories to ensure an incident-free summit while minimising inconvenience to the general public. As part of its preparations, NDMC has identified 41 major roads, divided into 14 circles, with a dedicated nodal officer assigned to each circle. The officers, along with field teams, will conduct daily inspections to ensure compliance with prescribed standard operating procedures.
The civic body has also identified 15 locations for floral boards, nine locations for floral fountains and 17 roundabouts for special beautification and illumination. Several other prominent sites and their surrounding areas have been earmarked for focused cleanliness and beautification, although their details have not been disclosed due to security considerations. Reviewing the preparations, NDMC Chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said, “The preparedness plan is aimed at ensuring efficient planning, coordinated execution, uninterrupted civic services and international standards of urban management throughout the Summit period.” He added that all departments have been directed to work in close coordination so that New Delhi presents a “clean, green, well-maintained and aesthetically enhanced face” to international delegates and visitors. Notably, the NDMC will deploy additional sanitation staff and night-duty teams from September 9 to 14, with intensive cleaning using mechanical sweepers and scrubbers. Temporary dustbins and mobile toilets will be installed, while stray animals will be removed. The civic body will also coordinate with hotels, RWAs and market associations to maintain cleanliness.
The horticulture plan includes seasonal flowers, landscaping, green corridors, pruning and decorative planters. Roads and civic infrastructure will be repaired, including potholes, footpaths, railings and signage, while drainage and debris removal will be closely monitored. Further, streetlights and decorative illumination will be maintained with backup power and Quick Response Teams. BRICS branding will be displayed on 154 digital screens and around 83 PTUs/CTUs, supported by publicity campaigns across the NDMC area. Special enforcement drives will target encroachments, unauthorised hoardings, street vending and construction violations along key routes.
Medical teams and ambulances will be deployed, while food inspections and mosquito-control measures will be intensified. Meanwhile, NDMC has also appointed nodal officers for BRICS Bazaar, Run & Ride, Murals & Painting and Food Festival. A 24×7 Command and Control Centre, supported by CCTV surveillance and field inspections, will monitor civic services and ensure prompt resolution of deficiencies. NDMC Chairman Dwivedi has also appealed to market associations, RWAs and other organisations in the NDMC area to join the civic authorities in cleanliness and area-management drives, saying the summit provides an opportunity to showcase New Delhi as a clean, green, safe and internationally presentable capital. In parallel, the Delhi Police has intensified security and traffic preparedness ahead of the summit.
An interstate coordination meeting was held at the Delhi Police Headquarters on Thursday, chaired by the Commissioner of Police, Delhi. Senior police officers from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chandigarh participated in the meeting along with senior officials from Delhi Police’s Law & Order, Special Cell, Traffic, Security, Crime, Transport and Intelligence wings. The meeting focused on intelligence sharing, border checking, traffic regulation, verification of suspicious persons and vehicles and preventing unauthorised movement into the national capital. The movement of drones and other flying objects from open areas was also discussed, with agencies stressing the need for advance information regarding suspicious elements or vehicles. Traffic restrictions to be imposed during the summit and measures to prevent unauthorised intrusion through borders were shared with neighbouring states.
Officers from the participating states and Union Territories assured full cooperation and close coordination for effective implementation. The Delhi Police Commissioner also emphasised the need to cause minimum inconvenience to the general public during the summit period. The police have planned an extensive public awareness campaign regarding traffic restrictions through print and electronic media, social media and FM radio. NCR police forces have also been requested to issue traffic advisories in their respective jurisdictions. Police officials have been asked to regulate non-destined vehicles entering Delhi, while ensuring that alternate routes for commuters remain free of encroachments and unauthorised parking.
