Delhi asks Haryana to transfer ITO barrage control to prevent future flooding.
New Delhi: The Delhi government will formally request Haryana to hand over operational control of the ITO barrage on the Yamuna River, citing last year’s devastating floods and the need for faster emergency response.
In 2023, widespread flooding crippled parts of Delhi. Malfunctioning gates at the ITO barrage—under Haryana’s jurisdiction—worsened the situation. Although the gates have since been repaired, Delhi officials stress that full control is needed to act quickly during monsoon emergencies.
Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma has approved the proposal and will raise the matter with the Haryana government. “Though repairs are complete, control is critical for timely decisions,” he said. “I will personally follow up to ensure Delhi’s safety.”
The ITO barrage has long been a flashpoint between the two states. During last year’s flood, Delhi officials alleged that delays in opening the gates led to a surge in water levels.
The Aam Aadmi Party welcomed the move, recalling earlier requests to Haryana. “The BJP-led Haryana government failed in 2023. It’s time Delhi takes over,” AAP said in a statement.
This is not the first time Delhi has raised the issue. Previous administrations have made similar appeals, citing repeated coordination problems during flood season.
As heavy rains loom again, the Delhi government wants clear authority over critical infrastructure like the ITO barrage to avoid future disasters and ensure swift, coordinated action when floodwaters rise.
