NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Thursday dubbed the claims of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of cheating in Karnataka during last year Lok Sabha polls as "baseless" and issued fiery responses to him wondering why such baseless and threatening allegations are being made against CEC when no appeal has been filed by the grand old party last year.

The Election Commission spokesperson in a fiery response referred to Rahul Gandhi's warning as unwarranted threatening statements made by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha against CEC Gyanesh Kumar on Karnataka Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

The spokesperson said: "As far as Electoral Rolls of Karnataka Lok Sabha 2024 are concerned, not a single appeal was filed with DM or CEO of Karnataka, a valid legal remedy available to Congress under Section 24 of RP Act 1950.

"As far as conduct of Lok Sabha elections 2024 are concerned, out of 10 Election Petitions, not a single Election Petition was filed by any loosing Congress candidate as a legal remedy available to the party under Section 80 of RP Act 1951," the spokesperson said.

"ECI is wondering as to why such baseless and threatening allegations are being made against CEC and that too now?" the spokesperson added.

The remarks came after the former Congress chief on Thursday doubled down on his claims that the party has found voter addition in one of the Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka in last year Lok Sabha polls.

The Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli also issued a stern warning to the poll panel and said that if you think you can get away with it, you are mistaken and we are going to come for you.

"I want to send a message to the Election Commission: If you think you are going to get away with it, if your officers think they are going to get away with it, you are mistaken. You are not going to get away with it, because we are going to come for you," Rahul Gandhi said in a stern message to the poll panel.

The Commission and the Congress leader have been engaged in a bitter war of words for past couple of months.
