Srinagar: A fierce encounter erupted between terrorists and security forces in the Akhal forest area of Devsar in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday, officials confirmed.

A senior police officer said that a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, and CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation based on credible intelligence inputs about terrorist presence in the dense forest zone.

“During the search operation, contact was established with the hiding terrorists. Exchange of fire is currently underway. More details will follow,” the officer said.

The fresh encounter comes days after three Pakistani terrorists were eliminated in Operation Mahadev in the Dachigam forest area. With this, a total of six terrorists have been killed this week in two separate encounters, one in South Kashmir and another in the Poonch sector of the Jammu region.

Security forces remain on high alert amid increasing attempts of infiltration and movement by foreign terrorists across the region.
