CHANDIGARH: Sarwan, a resident of Firozpur district in Punjab, set an example of courage during Operation Sindoor by fearlessly extending help to Indian Army personnel deployed along the border. In recognition of his bravery and selfless service, the young boy was honoured on the occasion of National Veer Bal Diwas and selected for the Prime Minister’s Rashtriya Veer Bal Puraskar.
The award was presented to Sarwan at a ceremony in New Delhi by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. Sarwan, along with other award winning children, also interacted with the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during the programme.
During Operation Sindoor, Sarwan helped civilians as well as Army personnel in risky conditions in Firozpur. His efforts at such a young age drew national attention and praise from both civil and military authorities. Political leaders across Punjab congratulated Sarwan, calling it a proud moment for the state. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said the honour reflected the bravery rooted in Punjab’s soil and described Sarwan’s achievement as a matter of pride for the entire state.
Sarwan, who lives in the Mamdot area of Firozpur district, has said that he wants to join the Indian Army when he grows up and serve the nation. His father said that since Operation Sindoor, Army officers have shown immense affection towards his son and encouraged him for his spirit of service. Speaking after receiving the award, 10 year old Sarwan said that when Operation Sindoor began against Pakistan and soldiers arrived in his village, he felt a strong urge to help them.
He recalled carrying milk, tea, buttermilk and ice for the soldiers posted near his village. He said receiving the award made him extremely happy and that he had never imagined such recognition. Earlier, the Indian Army had also honoured Sarwan for his contribution during Operation Sindoor. The Army declared him the youngest civilian warrior and announced that it would bear the complete cost of his education.
During a ceremony at Firozpur Cantonment, the General Officer Commanding in Chief of Western Command, Manoj Kumar Katiyar, felicitated the child. Army officials said Sarwan’s story reminded the nation of unsung heroes who are always ready to sacrifice everything for the country. Sunil Jakhar, in a post on social media platform X, saluted Sarwan’s patriotism and courage, saying that his bravery during Operation Sindoor proved that love for the nation is not limited by age.
He added that Sarwan carried forward Punjab’s long tradition of valour and responsibility. Punjab Congress president Raja Warring also congratulated Sarwan on X, calling the honour a moment of immense pride. He praised the child’s courage and commitment to the nation and said such examples inspire both children and youth across the country. Following the national recognition, there is a celebratory atmosphere across Punjab. Social organisations and political leaders have congratulated Sarwan and his family, calling his journey an inspiration and a reminder that courage and patriotism can shine even at a very young age.
