Chandigarh: In a deeply concerning development, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has received yet another threat email — the eighth in a row — targeting Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar. The latest email was sent late last night to the SGPC’s official address, even as the Punjab Police continues its investigation into the series of bomb threats that have shaken the Sikh religious community and security agencies alike.
The consistent pattern of threat mails began surfacing from July 14, prompting heightened security measures across the Darbar Sahib complex and other major gurdwaras under SGPC control. The threatening emails, some laced with references to RDX and connections to Tamil Nadu political circles, have caused alarm among devotees and the SGPC management.
In a significant breakthrough earlier this week, Punjab Police arrested 24-year-old Shubham Dubey, a software engineer from Faridabad, Haryana, for allegedly sending some of these threatening emails. According to Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Dubey’s laptop and mobile phone were seized and are currently undergoing forensic analysis.
However, despite Dubey’s arrest, the situation has not de-escalated. Last night’s email indicates that either multiple actors are involved or that Dubey may not be acting alone. The messages contain language suggesting ideological motives, and some carry veiled references to DMK and Anna University in Chennai.
Punjab Police, in collaboration with central agencies and cyber experts, is now probing possible inter-state links, particularly to southern states. Investigators are also analyzing data logs from service providers to trace digital footprints that could lead to more suspects. Intelligence agencies are not ruling out the possibility of the threats being orchestrated as a coordinated attempt to create unrest.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has expressed serious concerns and urged the government to act decisively. “This is the eighth such threat. It’s no longer an isolated act. Authorities must wake up and take concrete steps to protect the sanctity and security of our shrines,” Dhami said.
Meanwhile, security around Sri Darbar Sahib remains under a high alert, with increased surveillance, frisking of visitors, and deployment of additional personnel by the Punjab Police and SGPC’s internal task force. The Ministry of Home Affairs is reportedly monitoring the case closely due to the sensitive nature of the target.
Though police describe Dubey’s arrest as a “partial success,” the continued flow of threats has made it clear that the investigation is far from over.
