Fresh security blanket as attacks increase in Srinagar

Srinagar: With a few days left for the Republic Day celebrations in the city, the security grid has held a series of meetings in Jammu and Srinagar, as the attacks by terrorists have increased in the past few days.

After remaining peaceful for months, the city is witnessing grenade attacks, which has prompted the security grid to issue fresh advisories to its officers and cops. A senior police officer told The Sunday Guardian that they have installed more CCTV cameras and security check-points in the city to thwart any attacks.

Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir range) S.P. Pani has issued an official advisory asking the cops to set up more check and frisking points in and around Srinagar as the main Republic Day function will be held in the city. Police have been told to do the same in rural areas of the Valley also, as functions will be held at the district quarters too to mark the occasion.

The advisory has also asked all the school managements in Kashmir to take all possible precautionary measures not to allow any strangers to mingle with students in the scheduled functions to be held on Republic Day.

According to the police, high vigil is being maintained on the highways and all the sensitive installations in Srinagar including Doordarshan Kendra and Radio Kashmir Srinagar.

A high-level security meeting was held in the city after another grenade attack occurred near the clock tower at Lal Chowk in the city on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, on Thursday, three cops were injured when terrorists hurled a grenade in the Raj Bagh area of the city. On Friday again, the terrorists lobbed a grenade at the security forces in Shopian district of South Kashmir. The earlier attack was owned by banned outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Due to these attacks, police said that they were taking all preventive measures to thwart any further attacks.
