Heavy rains trigger landslides, shutting Jammu-Srinagar Highway; Mughal and SSG Roads remain open for traffic
Srinagar: Authorities on Friday issued a fresh traffic advisory for commuters across Jammu and Kashmir as continuous rainfall and landslides have severely impacted road connectivity. While the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has launched clearance operations in the Pir Panjal region, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains closed due to extensive damage at several locations.
Officials said traffic is plying smoothly on the Mughal Road and Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road as per the advisory. However, Sinthan Road is open only for light motor vehicles (LMVs) and is being monitored by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains blocked at multiple stretches, particularly between Jakheni and Chenani, where the road surface has been severely affected. Restoration work is currently underway, but officials have advised commuters to avoid the route until further notice.
Travelers have been urged to follow lane discipline on operational routes, as reckless overtaking has led to congestion at several points. Authorities also warned the public against believing unverified reports about the reopening of the highway and urged reliance on official communication only.
People planning to travel have been asked to stay updated through the official Twitter handle and Facebook page of J&K Traffic Police for real-time traffic status.
