SRINAGAR: Security forces on Monday foiled a possible terror attempt after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detected and safely destroyed in the Heff area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Officials said the explosive device was discovered by patrolling security personnel during a routine sweep in the area. Upon detection, authorities immediately suspended vehicular traffic along the adjoining road to ensure the safety of civilians and personnel in the vicinity.
A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was rushed to the spot and carried out a controlled detonation following all safety protocols. The swift and coordinated response ensured that the device was neutralized without causing any injuries or damage to property.
The area was subsequently cordoned off, and a joint operation involving police and security forces was launched to sanitize the surroundings. Once the area was deemed safe, normal traffic movement resumed.
A police officer involved in the operation stated that the timely detection of the IED prevented a potentially devastating incident. “The alertness of our personnel averted a serious tragedy. We remain fully vigilant to counter such threats,” the officer said.
Authorities have registered a case in connection with the incident, and an investigation is underway to identify and trace those responsible for planting the device. Preliminary suspicion points to militant elements trying to disrupt peace and target security personnel or civilians.
Incidents involving IEDs have been a recurring tactic used by militants in the region. Security forces have intensified patrolling and surveillance operations across south Kashmir to prevent similar attempts and maintain peace.
The successful operation reflects the high level of coordination and preparedness among the forces stationed in sensitive areas of the valley.
