The government will prioritize developing Buddhist heritage sites, enhancing infrastructure and promotion to attract global tourists.

New Delhi: On Saturday Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled plans to develop the country’s top 50 tourist destinations in collaboration with states through a challenge-based approach. This move aims to create employment opportunities, enhance infrastructure, and position India as a premier global travel hub.
Sitharaman highlighted that medical tourism will be actively promoted in partnership with private sector stakeholders.

Additionally, the government will place special emphasis on destinations associated with the life and teachings of Lord Buddha.
Recognizing the need for a skilled workforce in the expanding hospitality and tourism industries, the government plans to implement extensive skill-development programs. To further incentivize states to develop their tourist destinations, the government will introduce performance-linked incentives. These incentives will be awarded based on key criteria such as efficient destination management, availability of tourist-friendly amenities, cleanliness, and innovative promotional strategies. By fostering healthy competition, the initiative seeks to elevate the overall quality of tourism across India.

The government is set to introduce more streamlined e-visa facilities. Simplifying visa procedures is expected to attract a larger number of foreign visitors.

By leveraging state partnerships and incorporating innovative approaches, the government aspires to transform key tourist locations into world-class attractions.

The tourism sector, which plays a crucial role in India’s GDP and employment landscape, is projected to experience substantial growth as a result of these measures.

Additionally, the Finance Minister acknowledged the rising demand for homestay accommodations. To support this trend, the government will extend MUDRA loans to individuals looking to provide high-quality lodging options.

Alok K. Singh, Chairman and CEO of Travomint, told The Sunday Guardian that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has introduced several initiatives aimed at promoting medical tourism and wellness in India, with a strong emphasis on private sector collaboration. A key aspect of this strategy is the relaxation of visa norms to attract international travelers, which is expected to directly contribute to job creation in the tourism sector.”

The Finance Minister has also announced the inclusion of hotels in the harmonized scheme, along with the extension of MUDRA loans to homestays. A major step in regional development is the establishment of greenfield airports in Bihar.

Patna Airport is set to undergo significant upgrades to enhance passenger capacity and streamline travel.
