Srinagar: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, on Thursday said that the Khelo India Water Sports Festival in Srinagar reflects the Centre’s firm commitment to promoting sports, nurturing local talent, and boosting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized that the synergy of sports and tourism holds the power to catapult the region onto the global stage.

Speaking at the inaugural event held at Dal Lake, Khadse noted, “There is immense potential in J&K. By integrating tourism with sports, we can elevate the region’s profile internationally.” She said the government is dedicated to providing top-tier infrastructure and opportunities to young athletes across the Union Territory.

Khadse also touched on the sensitive issue of Indo-Pak sports exchanges. “The nation and its citizens come first. We cannot hurt the sentiments of our people,” she said in response to the ongoing restrictions on Pakistani players in India. “While sports are important for growth and unity, national security and emotions take precedence,” she asserted.

At the event held at SKICC, the minister highlighted that over 400 athletes from across India are participating in competitions such as rowing, canoeing, and kayaking on the iconic Dal Lake. “The enthusiasm of the youth here is inspiring. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our aim is to strengthen both sports and sports tourism.”

She also announced that every district in J&K will be equipped with five Khelo India Centres, and talent identification programmes are actively underway. “We want to see youth from J&K on international platforms, bringing home medals and pride,” Khadse added.

The festival also featured cultural showcases highlighting the rich heritage and spirit of Kashmir, marking the first-of-its-kind water sports event held on Dal Lake.
