Srinagar: The ongoing counter-terror operation in the dense alpine forests of the Akhal Devsar area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district has entered its eighth consecutive day, becoming one of the longest anti-terror operations in Kashmir in recent decades.
According to official sources, the terrorists engaged in the encounter are reportedly using steel bullets, escalating the threat level for the security forces. The gunfight, which began on August 1, has already left two terrorists dead and multiple soldiers injured.
The prolonged nature of the operation is attributed to the rugged terrain and dense forest cover, making the search and engagement more challenging.
The operation is being carried out jointly by elite PARA commandos, Rashtriya Rifles, J&K Police, and CRPF, who are maintaining strict coordination to avoid collateral damage. Drones, UAVs, sniffer dogs, and attack helicopters have been deployed to pinpoint the militants’ locations hidden deep within the forest.
Meanwhile, the civilian population in Akhal village has raised distress calls, seeking immediate relocation.
Locals claim they are facing psychological trauma, food shortages, and sleepless nights due to continuous gunfire and explosions.
“We have been facing severe difficulties for the past eight days. Firing and bombs go on during the night. There is a shortage of ration in our homes now,” said Kohli Mohammad, a resident of the area.
Another villager, Khanday, shared, “We have not slept for seven days. Children cry throughout the night. We are out of medicines and ration. Women and children are terrified, and many are developing psychological issues.”
Security forces say the operation is ongoing, with two to three more terrorists suspected to be hiding. Officials stress that efforts are being made to avoid harm to civilians, while pressure mounts to bring the situation to a close.
This continues to be the longest anti-terror operation in the Kashmir region in 2025, highlighting the persistent threat of terrorism in the region despite improved security measures post the abrogation of Article 370 on 5 August 2019.
