CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sharpened his message on internal accountability within the Aam Aadmi Party, stating that Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha is “compromised” and appeared to prioritise the “airport samosa” issue over core concerns of Punjab.

The remark, coupled with Mann describing Chadha as “compromised”, has brought into focus the party’s expectation that its leaders remain closely aligned with state-centric governance issues.

The Chief Minister’s comments come in the backdrop of Chadha’s recent removal as deputy leader of AAP in the Rajya Sabha. While the party has not officially detailed reasons for the reshuffle, the developments have indicated a recalibration of roles within the organisation. Chadha, who once played a visible role in AAP’s Punjab campaign and outreach, has seen his political space narrow in recent months.

Mann’s reference to the airport samosa issue is being viewed within party circles as symbolic rather than incidental. It underscores a broader concern that public representatives must focus on substantive matters affecting Punjab, including governance, law and order, and economic challenges, instead of issues that may not resonate strongly with the state’s pressing needs.

Chadha had earlier raised concerns related to airport pricing and passenger experience, which drew attention on social media. However, within the current political context, that intervention has been contrasted with expectations that leaders from Punjab should be more vocal on state-specific issues in Parliament and beyond.

Chadha’s response to the developments has been cautious. His statement that he has been “silenced, not defeated” suggests disagreement, yet stops short of direct confrontation. The tone indicates an attempt to retain political space while avoiding escalation within the party.

As per party sources, the issue also relates to a notice concerning the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner. According to these claims, Chadha allegedly declined to sign the notice despite being asked to do so by the party’s floor leadership. While this has not been officially confirmed on record, it has been cited within party circles as an instance of divergence from the party line on a sensitive institutional matter.

Taken together, these episodes are understood to have contributed to growing differences between Chadha and the AAP’s top leadership. While the party has not publicly detailed the reasons behind his removal from the deputy leader’s post, the internal messaging has increasingly stressed discipline, alignment, and adherence to collective decisions.

For Punjab, where governance challenges remain significant, the episode serves as a reminder that political messaging is increasingly being tied to performance and relevance. Mann’s remarks signal that symbolic or peripheral issues may not find priority in the party’s current framework.

At the same time, the developments are unlikely to alter the broader stability of the government. Instead, they reflect an internal adjustment as AAP continues to evolve its leadership structure in Punjab. How Chadha aligns himself with these expectations in the coming period will determine his role going forward within the party’s state-centric approach.
