Nirbhaya’s mother, RG Kar victim’s parents unite for justice

New Delhi: Grief and resilience shared the stage at the We Women Want Conclave and Shakti Awards 2025, as Asha Devi—mother of 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim Nirbhaya — joined Ratna and Shekhar Devnath, parents of a young doctor brutally assaulted and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital in August 2024.

Moderated by journalist Devika Chopra, the session became a searing call for justice and reform. The Devnaths recalled their daughter’s journey from a tailor’s home to topping state medical entrance exams and serving tirelessly during COVID-19, before her life was cut short on the night of August 9, 2024. “Her dream was to serve the poor — one cruel night destroyed it all,” Shekhar said, alleging legal manipulation and institutional apathy.

Asha Devi, drawing from her 12-year legal battle post-Nirbhaya, pledged solidarity with the family. “Our fight was never just for one girl. It’s for every daughter of this country,” she said, criticising those who, in her view, defended the accused in both cases. Advocate Seema Kushwaha, who represented Nirbhaya’s family, and host Rishabh Gulati promised legal aid and political outreach in Delhi. “We won’t let your daughter’s story be silenced,” Gulati assured.

The session ended with an emotional exchange between the mothers. “You’re not alone,” Asha told Ratna. “Keep fighting.” Ratna’s reply — “We demand justice. Not just for my daughter, but for every daughter” — drew a standing ovation.

Asha Devi, Seema Kushwaha, and the Devnaths were honoured with the Shakti Award for Courage and Justice for transforming personal tragedy into public advocacy. Their stories underscored that, even after legal reforms post-Nirbhaya, justice for many remains delayed — but the fight continues, louder and stronger.
