Bihar CM announces electricity relief, job drive ahead of Assembly Elections 2025.
New Delhi: As Bihar prepares for its Assembly elections scheduled for October–November this year, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has introduced a significant welfare initiative aimed at reducing the financial burden on electricity consumers across the state. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kumar declared that beginning August 1, 2025, every domestic electricity consumer in Bihar will receive 125 units of electricity free of charge each month.
This measure is anticipated to benefit nearly 1.67 crore households statewide. “We have always been committed to supplying electricity to all residents at affordable rates. To further ease the burden on the public, we have now decided that starting from the bill for the month of July, domestic consumers will not be charged for the first 125 units of electricity,” Kumar posted on the platform.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened political activity in Bihar, as both the ruling coalition and opposition parties intensify their efforts to win public support ahead of the upcoming elections.
In addition to the free electricity scheme, Chief Minister Kumar unveiled an ambitious solar energy initiative. Over the next three years, the state government plans to install solar power systems either on residential rooftops or in nearby public spaces, based on the consent of domestic consumers. This initiative is part of the government’s broader renewable energy strategy.
Under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, the government will fully fund the installation of solar panels for extremely poor households, while offering substantial financial assistance to other families. The state aims to produce up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy over the next three years through this program, significantly enhancing Bihar’s clean energy infrastructure.
In another major development, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the Education Department to promptly identify existing teacher vacancies in government-run schools and to accelerate the TRE 4 recruitment process. This decision comes as a welcome relief to thousands of job aspirants waiting to be appointed as teachers.
Kumar also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to gender inclusivity in employment, stating that the 35% reservation quota for women in teaching jobs would apply exclusively to women who are permanent residents of Bihar. This reinforces the administration’s focus on empowering local women through meaningful opportunities in the public sector.
These dual announcements—125 units of free electricity and the expedited recruitment of government teachers—are being widely interpreted as strategic moves to strengthen the ruling JD(U)-BJP-led NDA’s electoral prospects. While the opposition is also actively engaging with voters, Nitish Kumar’s welfare-oriented agenda is expected to resonate strongly among both urban and rural populations.
