Srinagar: The fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists holed up in the dense Akhal forest area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district has entered its third day, with intermittent gunfire and blasts continuing through the night, officials said on Sunday.

The joint operation was launched on Friday based on credible intelligence about terrorist presence in the area. So far, two terrorists have been killed, while another is believed to be wounded. One soldier sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment, according to officials.

Sources suggest that this could be one of the most significant anti-terror operations of the year.

To locate the remaining terrorists, high-tech surveillance equipment, including drones, thermal imaging devices, and helicopter support, has been deployed. Elite units such as the Para Special Forces are actively engaged in the ongoing operation.

Top security officials including the Director General of Police and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army’s 15 Corps are closely monitoring the developments on the ground.

The encounter remains active as forces continue their efforts to neutralize the remaining threats.

Earlier In a significant counter-terror success, security forces eliminated three Pakistani terrorists in Dachigam forest in Srinagar on July 28, including Sulieman alias Asif the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam attack during a fierce encounter.

The operation, codenamed ‘Operation Mahadev’, was launched by the Army’s elite para commandos after intelligence agencies intercepted a satellite phone signal linked to the Pahalgam attackers. Acting swiftly on this input, a joint team of security forces cordoned off the forested area and engaged the terrorists, leading to a decisive gun battle.

Sulieman and his two associates were gunned down in the operation, marking a major blow to cross-border terror activities and a breakthrough in the ongoing counter-terror drive across Kashmir.
