NEW DELHI: The Opposition has ramped up the issue of "vote chori" (voter manipulation) in Assam ahead of the Assam Elections 2026. The opposition, led by the Congress party, along with regional parties such as Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad, has all evoked the issue of voter manipulation by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The issue was primarily raised by Raijor Dal Supremo Akhil Gogoi, who has alleged that during a BJP meeting which was done in video conference, the BJP President Dilip Saikia had talked about manipulating voters. In an exclusive interview with TSG, Akhil Gogoi demanded that the video conference of the BJP should be made public by the President. Speaking on the sidelines of Raijor Dal's fifth foundation day programme held in the Khanapora area of Guwahati, Gogoi claimed that the BJP was planning large-scale changes to electoral rolls to favour the ruling party.

He alleged that the conspiracy was discussed during a recent video conference of the BJP state committee. According to Gogoi, BJP state president Dilip Saikia allegedly instructed party MLAs and office-bearers to prepare lists of anti-BJP and non-BJP voters with the intention of deleting their names from the electoral rolls before elections. He further alleged that responsibility for altering voter lists in nearly 60 Assembly constituencies had been assigned to senior BJP leader Ashok Singhal. Opposition-led political parties in Assam on Thursday filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Dispur Police Station, alleging "vote chori" (vote theft) through the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of the electoral rolls.
