NEW DELHI: The Patna High Court on Wednesday directed the Congress party to remove from all social media platforms an AI-generated video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother, Heeraben Modi.
The order came from a division bench of Acting Chief Justice P.B. Bajanthri and Justice Alok Sinha while hearing a petition filed by Vivekanand Singh.
On 10 September, the Bihar Congress unit had posted on its official X handle a 36-second video, marked “AI GENERATED,” in which the Prime Minister is shown dreaming of his late mother, who is depicted as criticising him over his politics in poll-bound Bihar.
Central government counsel at Patna HIgh court, Ratnesh Kushwaha told this newspaper that the court, in its interim order, asked the Congress to pull down the video. He described it as “prima facie defamatory and derogatory.”
A detailed order is expected later in the day. Bihar is scheduled to go to polls next month.
Earlier, an FIR has also been registered in Delhi following a complaint by BJP worker , alleging that the video was defamatory and insulting to the dignity of women.
Heeraben Modi passed away in December 2022 at the age of 99.
