New Delhi: Even as US President Donald Trump asserted that India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to not but the Russian oil, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi took a veiled dig at him saying the Prime Minister is frightened of Trump as he allows him to decide and announce and does not contradict him on Operation Sindoor.

Rahul Gandhi in a post on X, said, "PM Modi is frightened of Trump. Allows Trump to decide and announce that India will not buy Russian oil. Keeps sending congratulatory messages despite repeated snubs. Canceled the Finance Minister’s visit to America. Skipped Sharm el-Sheikh and doesn’t contradict him on Operation Sindoor."

Earlier, Congress attacked Modi for "compromising the country's dignity", calling Russia India's close ally.

In a post on X, Congress said, "Narendra Modi has once again compromised the country’s dignity. According to Trump, bowing to his anger and threats, Modi assured that India would stop buying oil from Russia. One thing is clear – Narendra Modi is a weak Prime Minister, and his actions have unsettled the nation’s foreign policy. Russia has always been a close ally of India. Don’t damage the country’s relationships just to improve personal ‘friendly ties'."

Trump claimed on Wednesday that PM Modi has assured him that India will stop buying Russian oil, months after he imposed punitive tariffs over the purchases.

Even Congress general secretary and communication incharge Jairam Ramesh also slammed the government accusing it of "outsourcing the key decisions to US".

In a post on X, Ramesh said, "At 5:37 PM Indian Standard Time on May 10, 2025, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was the very first to announce that India has halted Operation Sindoor.

"Subsequently, President Trump has claimed 51 times in 5 different countries that he had intervened to stop Operation Sindoor by using tariffs and trade as his weapon of pressure," he said.

"Yet our PM kept silent," he said, adding, "Now President Trump has declared yesterday that Mr. Modi has assured him that India will not import oil from Russia. Mr. Modi appears to have outsourced key decisions to America. The 56-inch chest has shrunk and shrivelled."
